A Dramatic Vision

The USS Midway Museum has developed a conceptual vision for Navy Pier that includes permanent downtown parking and a Veterans Park. Extending the length of the pier, along the Greatest Generation Walk, and out to the Bob Hope Memorial on the G Street Mole, Veterans Park would become the largest of its kind on the West Coast.

In addition, civic leaders Malin Burnham and Hal Sadler have proposed a complementary concept that not only includes a Veterans Park, but also incorporates a community arts and events venue that could become the permanent home of San Diego’s Summer Pops as well as a dramatic architectural element that promises to become the internationally recognizable symbol of San Diego. Their vision, “Wings of Freedom,” reflects San Diego’s maritime, yachting, and naval aviation heritage.

The combined vision would feature increased bay views and access, a new waterfront park, permanent parking, public restrooms, and a dramatic and inspirational community identity.

Current Status

Town hall meetings have been conducted and the project is now being reviewed by the Port of San Diego staff. An environmental impact report is expected later this year. At that time, additional public comment will be solicited.
